Ryderâs got the stock hidden in the west end of the city. Iâm glad itâs not a long drive. Sunrise is upon us, and on a clearer day, Clark and I would be in real trouble. As it is, heâs still struggling to stay awake at the wheel.
âWhy didnât you go with Miranda?â I ask. Seems as if sheâd want her assistant with herâhe goes everywhere else she does.
His fingers tighten on the wheel. Heâs seemed tense even in the safety of the car. Iâm guessing itâs a reaction to my fire, but I canât suppress it now when itâs helping me heal. Heâs just going to have to deal with it.
âI tried,â he says. âShe said that this time the stakes were too highâwouldnât even tell me where she was going. Sheâd left Raymond in charge of things in the city, but I think Viktorâs betrayal shook her. Itâs not that she doesnât trust Raymond...â
âShe just wanted someone there she was really sure about. I get it.â
Heâs silent for another block, eyes glued to the road.
âYou donât like me much, do you?â I ask.
âNo.â His voice is soft, but not apologetic.
âThanks for getting me out of there, anyway.â
He glances over. âI wouldnât have left you behind. Itâs not personal.â He clears his throat. âI mean, it is. But youâre a symptom of a bigger problem, one that goes back to before you or I were vampires.â
I twist in my seat, trying to find a comfortable position. Itâs impossible. âWhat problem?â
He shrugs. âHer interest in the unknown and the hidden. Her belief that thereâs more to the supernatural world than we understand.â
âWild cards,â I add, and he nods.
âThatâs as good a description as any. Miranda hasnât been careful. She knew other clans were watching, even wishing her ill, but sheâs always been determined to do things her way. I donât know why she made you a project, but here we are. And now everythingâs coming to a head.â
Thereâs no malice in his voice. No judgement. He speaks of her like someone whoâs watched his soulmate go astray, though such a thing should be impossible for soulless creatures.
âShe deserves better than this,â he says, flicking the windshield wipers on against a faint drizzle thatâs barely heavy enough to require them. Iâm not sure heâs really talking to me anymore. âSheâs amazingâstrong, clever, wise, powerfulâbut itâs too much for anyone. I wonder sometimes what things would be like for her if sheâd been denied the chance to lead a clan, or if sheâd just been a little less stubborn about things like the werewolves.â
I shoot him a glance from the corner of my eye. âThat was her decision to make. I donât think she regrets any of it.â
âBut some of the responsibility lies with you, doesnât it? If sheâd been proven wrong and the werewolves exterminated, tensions with other clans might have settled. Viktor wouldnât have stood a chance.â
âShe wasnât wrong, though.â Iâm too focused on my pain to feel any real irritation, but itâs as if heâs talking about a fictional version of events.
